Data
The Data side of MEEO
From sources to ready-to-use insights: this is how we work.
MEEO draws from data sources spanning the entire geospatial domain: climate, atmosphere, terrestrial and marine environments, and natural hazards.
Data Sources
Copernicus Climate Data Store (CDS)
Historical and forecast climate data: temperature, precipitation, wind, humidity.
Copernicus Atmosphere Data Store (ADS)
Atmospheric conditions: air quality, ozone, pollen, and pollutant gases.
Copernicus Dataspace
Satellite imagery from the Sentinel constellation, enabling up-to-date monitoring of diverse environments.
CREODIAS
Satellite archives processed directly in the cloud.
Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS)
Ocean monitoring: temperature, currents, salinity, algal presence.
IRPI - CNR
Territorial risk assessment: landslides, floods, soil erosion.
Data Ingestion & Processing
MEEO manages the entire data lifecycle: from collection and storage to processing, in a continuous and automated flow designed to operate natively in the cloud.
Data collection, storage and processing are operated via modern pipelines orchestrated primarily by Kubernetes: an open-source system that ensures business continuity, automatic scaling, and error recovery.
The final output of many pipelines is ARD (Analysis Ready Data): data that has already been corrected, calibrated and normalised, ready for direct analysis without any further pre-processing.
MEEO is able to read and generate major cloud-native geospatial formats: COG (Cloud Optimized GeoTIFF), NetCDF (Network Common Data Form) and ZARR.
For ensuring interoperability with any platform, MEEO’s solutions are fully compliant with the main international standards, such as INSPIRE (INfrastructure for Spatial InfoRmation in Europe), WMS (Web Map Service), WCS (Web Coverage Service) and OpenSearch.
Accessibility, Distribution & Visualization
MEEO makes processed geospatial data accessible through a comprehensive suite of tools designed to meet the needs of both users and automated applications.
APIs compliant with OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium) and REST (Representational State Transfer) standards allow access to data from heterogeneous systems through a uniform interface, supporting both machine-to-machine interactions and direct user access.
Data is also made discoverable through OpenSearch and STAC (SpatioTemporal Asset Catalog) catalogues, enabling efficient exploration of large and distributed datasets.
On the visualization side, MEEO develops interactive platforms and geospatial discovery interfaces that transform complex scientific data into intuitive, engaging, and easily usable tools, bridging the gap between raw satellite data and end users.
Data Management & Governance
MEEO applies rigorous Data Governance guidelines to ensure quality, consistency, and security across all datasets and services.
All data and services follow the FAIR principles (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reusability), that enable the company to create valuable products, distribute them securely and intuitively, and maintain control over resource use and duplication to keep efficiency at its highest.
This orientation is followed in a broad portfolio of projects, including CONCERTO, RescueME and CLEAR-EO, as well as ILIAD, EO4EU and IRIDE.
Data and Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) management are also part of MEEO's scope, ensuring compliance across complex multi-partner European projects.
Internally, MEEO relies on an expert data curation team that manages all the datasets and services offered by the company, collaborating with project managers to optimize data usage and improve service performance. To support these activities, new tools and procedures are continuously developed to streamline internal data management processes.
Projects
The following projects are those in which MEEO's data skills (ingestion, processing, access, distribution and visualization) are applied.
